Items Needed: 1 or 2 elastics, bobby pins, small bobby pins, gel, hairspray, curling iron, hair accessories

Start by sectioning off the front of hair and ponytail the back of hair into an upper pony. Comb thru hair with gel to keep it in place.

Section off a top portion of the ponytail and flower loop with a bobby pin on each side. Comb thru the hair with gel to keep it in place.  (Watch our flower loop tutorial here.)

Continue flower sectioning off and flower looping pony tail leaving small sections of hair out.

Section off the front and twist and bobby pin.  (Watch our twisting tutorial here.)

Continue sectioning and twisting until all of the front is twisted leaving the ends free.

With the left out hair from both the flower bun and the twists add extra flower loops randomly around the original flower bun.

When the back is looped up place a hair accessory between the original flower bun and the extra flower loops.

Add small accessories to the front of the hairstyle.  Don’t forget the hairspray!

There are lots of suggestions on how to figure out your shape. These include everything from outlining your face shape on a mirror with lipstick or eyeliner, to draping it with a towel and asking others to help you guess the shape. Not so easy, right?  And who can tell what shape was actually drawn on the mirror? But, there is actually a scientific way to determine your face shape.

To find out the shape of your face, measure it with a tape measure or ruler and  take the following measurements.

1. Measure your face across the top of your cheekbones. Write down the measurement on a piece of paper.

2. Measure across your jaw line from the widest point to the widest point. Write down the measurement.

3. Measure across your forehead at the widest point. Generally the widest point will be somewhere about halfway between your eyebrows and your hairline. Write down the measurement.

4. Measure from the tip of your hairline to the bottom of your chin.

Oval Face – Length equal to one and a half times width.

Round Face – Your face is as wide as it is long. This may vary a little but generally the measurement is close.

Oblong – Longer than it is wide.

Heart – Narrow at jaw line, wide at cheekbones/and or forehead.

Square – your face is about as wide as it is long.

Diamond – Widest at cheekbones, narrow forehead and jaw line of approximately equal widths.

Now that you know the shape of your face, which hairstyle looks best with which face shape?

Oval Shaped Face

Oval faces are considered the ideal facial shape. You can pull off a variety of hair styles. Your features are well balanced and almost every style can be achieved to look great on an oval face.

Updos for Oval faces: Almost anything is possible for oval faces. Your hair looks great pulled off your face. Bangs will accent your eyes.

Avoid:

• Wearing too much hair in your face.

• You want to show off those perfectly proportioned features!

Round Shaped Face

Round shaped faces tend to be round at the cheeks and have a circular form. Your face is heaviest near the ears and gradually curves upward and downward. Your goal is to slim your face.

Updos for Round faces: Any hair style that adds focus to your crown works best. A French twist with curls piled on top looks very nice. As long as you have a focal point such as curls on top or tussled bangs to the side, this will draw attention away from the roundness of your face. Use off center parts, as this will draw the eye to one side of the face and throw off the roundness

Avoid:

• Slick back styles without hair touching your face.

• Do not add width around the sides of your face, this will make the face appear to be wider than normal.

• Straight, flat bangs will only shorten your face. Try tussled or side bangs

Heart Shaped Face

The forehead is the widest part of the face, then it narrows gradually to the chin, which is slightly pointed. Your goal should be to diminish your forehead width and create more width to your small jaw line.

Updos for Heart Shaped faces: When choosing an updo for your facial type, keep these key elements in mind. You want to make your forehead appear less wide and jaw line less tiny to achieve a balanced face. If you have shoulder length hair or shorter, opt to wear your hair half up/ half down with fullness focused on the down part. Have bangs and wisps on your face. Side parting so you avoid pointing out your small chin if that is the case. This will also bring more balance to your forehead width

Avoid:

• Pulling all your back into a slick style.

• Height at the crown will only attract more attention from your diminishing jaw line.

Oblong/Rectangle

Long and thin, often with a chin that tends to look pointed. There is very little difference in width between the top, middle or bottom of your face but it is more rounded than the square face. Your goal should be to add width and fullness to the sides of the face and around the eyes, cheekbones and ears.

Updos for Oblong/Rectangle faces: Since you want to make your face appear to be shorter, updos work well on you. You can try hair styles with slick back looks. When styling updos, if a part is involved, part to the side. A hairpiece or ornament to hold bangs back looks very nice and takes away from the “square look” of your face. Try fuller hair styles such as piled up curls or 1/2 up 1/2 down styles. Bangs are nice and will shorten your face.

Avoid:

• Hair Styles that elongate your face such as tight barrel curls directly on top of the head.

• Avoid wisps they will make face appear to be longer.

• Center parts will bring attention to the middle of your face and make it appear to be longer

Square Shaped Face

Characterized by an angular jaw and square brow, with jaw and brow being nearly the same width. Your goal should be to soften the sharp angle of your jaw line and minimize your squared-off brow.

Updos for Oval faces: Almost anything is possible for oval faces. Your hair looks great pulled off your face. Bangs will accent your eyes.

Avoid:

• Wearing too much hair in your face.

• You want to show off those perfectly proportioned features!

Start drying the hair by pointing the dryer at the hair shaft directing the air from roots to ends.  Comb hair through with fingers to keep from tangling.  Continue until hair is 80% dry.

Apply any styling product desired.  Use mousse or gel with fine or medium textured hair or if you want to add curls.  For thick hair use an extra strength product.  To have sleek, straight hair use straightening products.

Choose a brush.  For a straight hairstyle use a flat and wide paddle brush.  For volume and texture use a round brush.  Remember, the larger the round brush, the larger the volume and curls.  Brush your hair while continuing to dry from root to end.  For volume and curl, brush and pull from the underneath side of hair.  Start drying with hot air first to open the cuticle and style the hair.  Then when almost dry, use cold air to lock the set. Don’t forget the hairspray to hold your style.

Items needed: 1 or 2 elastics, multiple mini elastics, bobby pins, gel, hair spray, curling iron

Start by parting hair to the side and add three mini elastics close together at top.

Take one elastic pony tail and split it into two equal sections.  With the first section, starting on the pony tail closest to the back of head, grab an equal amount of hair back a little more and add a mini elastic starting another row of mini elastics.  Split the next pony tail into two equal sections and combine the section closest to the back of head with the first pony’s left over section.  This mini elastic will be placed between the top rows first two elastics.  Continue on this row until you have one more elastic in this row than the first row of elastics. (Note: no additional underneath hair is added except to the end elastics when extending out.  This keeps the diamond shape.  Ex: row 2)

Make another row again this time doing one less than the previous row. Make a 4th row with one less mini elastic than the 3rd row.  (Option: in the 4th row add one more mini elastic for a different look.)

Pull all of the hair into a low side pony tail combing a small amount of gel thru the hair to keep it in place.

Create a flower bun by sectioning off a small portion of the top of the pony tail, flower looping it, and securing it with 2 bobby pins on both sides of the loop.  Combing a small amount of gel thru the pony tail before flower looping will help the flower bun stay in place.  (Watch our flower loop tutorial here.)

Continue with as many  flower loops as you like until all of the hair is looped. Don’t forget the hair spray.

Add a hair accessory of your choice in the middle of the bun.  For additional hair style looks, place the accessory right above the ear or behind the flower bun.

Items Needed: 2-4 elastics, bobby pins, tulle or ribbon, gel, hairspray, curling iron

Begin by parting the hair on one side and then sectioning off a small triangular section.

Twist and bobby pin the section into place.  (Watch our twisting tutorial here.)  A small amount of gel or hairspray combed thru the section will help it stay.

Keep sectioning off triangles, twisting and bobby pin them in place until the whole front is twisted.

Part the hair down the middle of the back and create 2 ponytails with 1-2 elastics each depending on the thickness of hair.  Keep them close the center.

Tie tulle or ribbons around the pony tails.  I have 3 separate strands of tulle on each ponytail.

Section one part of one poney tail and flower loop it pulling the tulle or ribbon thru as desired.  (Watch our flower loop tutorial here.)

Continue sectioning and flower looping hair with as many or few as desired until one side of pony tail is done.

Repeat the same pattern on the other side.  Don’t forget the hair spray!

So how do you get started?

First,

Don’t panic!  Wash, dry, try and if needed start over again.  Practice makes perfect and, since we are not using super glue, you can always start over.

Then,

Have fun with it!  Make some time for you and the “fabulous do’s”.  Experiment and don’t be afraid to try new things.

And Before long,

Creating “fabulous do’s”  will become a part of you!

I have learned that the essence of creating a “fabulous do” is creativity, oh yeah, and a little practice.   As soon as my princesses were sitting on their own I began fixing their hair.  Wanting to create more and more hairstyles they quickly learned the phrases “don’t move”, “look in the mirror”, and my personal favorite, “Beauty is pain.  Suck it up!”.  I remember getting frustrated with my crying girls.  Hair time had to change.  No longer was it going to be agonizing, atrocious, and awful.  I was going to make hair time fortifying, fabulous, and fun. So how did I do it?  With my hairdo ideas, tips and tricks!

Can’t get your princess to sit still for her hairdo makeover?  Not a problem.  Have you ever heard the phrase “a sucker in the mouth is worth elastics in the hair”?  O.K., that is my made up phrase but it works!  Get your small princess her favorite treat.  I like suckers because they hold onto the stick keeping both hand and mouth occupied.  Just remember to properly shield any princess clothing you might not want to get sticky.  My trick for this is a small garbage sack with a hole in the top for the princess head and holes in the side for the arms to come out.  This is easily torn off when both sucker and hairdo time is done.

Hairdo ideas, tips and tricks #2

For your older princesses, get a jar or plastic sandwich bag and fill it with get to know you questions.  Anything from “What is your favorite…?”, “What do you remember about…?”, to “How do you feel about…?”.  Take turns choosing and answering a question.  You and your princess will enjoy “fabulous do” time together and create lasting memories.

Hairspray, gel, elastics and bobby pins are your biggest side kick in you hair style adventure.  Don’t be afraid to use them.  Hairspray and gel will wash out.  Bobby pins and elastics can be hidden.  It is amazing the hair styles that can be created with the help of these items!

Practice, practice, practice.  Don’t give up after the first few times trying to create that “fabulous do”.  Practice really does make perfect.  You will become more comfortable creating different hairstyles if you keep trying to create them.

So go out and create some “fabulous do’s”.   And don’t forget the camera!

Items Needed: 1 or 2 elastics, gel, hair spray, hair accessory

Start by combing hair into a middle back pony tail using 1 or 2 elastics depending on the thickness of hair. Comb gel through hair to secure the loose ends in place before placing elastics in pony tail.

Pull hair partially back thru elastic making a  pony loop.  (Watch our pony loop tutorial here.)

Add large hair accessory of your choice forcing the pony loop up on top.

Bobby pin the forced up pony loop on top.

Adjust the left out ends with bobby pins.  Don’t forget the hair spray!

Items Needed: 1 or 2 elastics, bobby pins, gel, hairspray, curling iron

Start by putting the top1/2 of hair into a pony tail.

Flip the pony tail up and expose the bottom half of hair.  Start by sectioning off a small portion of the back of the hair and combing a small amount of gel in the section. Begin twisting until you reach the top of the part.  (Watch our twisting tutorial here.)

Insert a bobby pin from the top of the twist down to secure the twist in place.

Continue sectioning off hair in as many or few sections as desired, twisting and securing with a bobby pin until all of the bottom portion of the hair is twisted and secured.

Start with the first twisted section and just above the bobby pin twist in the same direction until hair twists and folds over itself in a crazy twist.  (Watch our crazy twist tutorial here.) Secure with a bobby pin leaving a small amount of hair out the end. (Note: In the photo, the twist are still there.  They are just covered with the hair that has not been crazy twisted.)

Continue crazy twisting all of the original twists, securing with a bobby pin and a small amount of hair spray.

Begin a flower bun with the pony tail by sectioning off a small portion of hair and securing the flower loops with a bobby pin on both sides. (Watch our flower loop tutorial here.)

Continue flower looping the rest of the pony tail leaving out 3 small sections for 3 additional crazy twists in the flower bun.

Crazy twist the remaining 3 small sections of hair individually and secure with a bobby pin in the flower bun.  Spray with hairspray.

Curl loose ends with a curling iron.  Don’t forget the hairspray!
